I found my way to acupuncture, or acupuncture found me, during my mid-twenties. I had been suffering from chronic headaches and migraines for more than a decade. No specific cause could be identified, and none of the conventional treatments or medications that were prescribed seemed to be doing much good. I started seeking out other systems of medicine and complementary treatments to try and find some relief from the daily suffering that was slowly ruining my life.
Simply put, acupuncture treatment was the first thing that my body and its headaches responded to. It provided me with so much relief that I was able to move forward in my life and become licensed as an acupuncturist so that I could help other people in similar circumstances. And, that is what my acupuncture practice is all about – helping people to overcome their problems or challenges so that they can move forward in their lives.
I have always been fascinated by the human body and its amazing inner workings. Likewise, I have always searched for ways to understand and improve my own health and well-being; it’s just something that I’m drawn to. I find two of integrative medicine guru, Dr. Andrew Weil’s tenets to be particularly instructive in this regard:
- Healing responses originate within us rather than without.
- Good medicine should always work from the premise that the body is capable of returning to a state of health.
Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine immediately captivated me with its emphasis on the above ideas. Here was a several thousand year old system of cultivating your body’s own internal resources to maintain health and resist disease that is still relevant today. It is something that I love, something that has changed my life for the better, and something that I will continue to study, practice and share for as long as I am allowed.
